What is your studio name and location?
I am Iryna Ruggeri, a Russian origin artist, freelance illustrator and surface pattern designer, a happy wife and mom of two. I’m addicted to coffee, creative life and based on the South Coast, UK. My little studio name is Design by Iryna Ruggeri.
Where did you study?
I am a graduate of the Vitebsk State Technological University, in Vitebsk, Belarus, where I earned a Degree in Fashion and Textile Design. Prior to becoming a freelancer, I worked in advertising agencies creating designs and illustrations, mostly engaged in packaging and labels designs.
Who do you design for? Who is your muse?
My work in constantly evolving and that is what I love about being creative. Besides, I’m a mum of two, live inspiration is running around my home, so I'm easily immersed in the world of cute characters, animals and adventure.
Describe your design process? What is your favourite medium to work in and why?
I enjoy working with bright colours, hand-drawn elements and hand painted textures. My mixed media designs always have a fun, playful twist that makes you smile. Each of them tells their own story. I love to draw and experiment with different styles, but I gravitate towards drawing funny and cute designs for a young audience the most.
What is your favourite part of the design process from inspiration, drawing to the final printed fabric/product?
I found joy with all parts of the design process, from inspiration, research and sketching out ideas to actually drawing and designing patterns. I am still discovering myself, my true style as a surface pattern designer… taking up design challenges, online courses, experimenting and looking for new techniques.
Best exhibition/museum/research trip/inspirational place
Italy is the best place for finding inspiration in the art and blissfully soaking in, Florence takes the top spot in the endless list, as it strikes a perfect balance between the old and new, masterpiece and modern, from Michelangelo's David to the Gucci Museum. I would highly recommend any artist to visit this Capital of Arts when their creative soul demands inspiration.
What do you hope to accomplish in the future?
The best moment for me is to see my patterns alive as fabrics, clothes, blankets and other beautiful products for children and for people who never want to grow up. My target is to develop my personal style further and to grow the artwork licensing side of my business.
Do you have any tips for new designers starting out?
The biggest tips I can give at this point are to put your head down and never give up on your dreams! Don't compare yourself with others and stay true to yourself. Keep it fun and you will live a happy life!
